Found on the MovieWeb website, we read an interesting article titled ‘King’s Features Characters We Want to See on the Big Screen Again‘.
Written by Danilo Raul on the 19th of April, 2023, we read an article which highlights a variety of comic book characters licensed by King Features Syndicate, which are ideal to be adapted to the big-screen, either for the first time or as a modern re-make.
Danilo rightly notes in his introduction:
King Features properties offer a wealth of potential for filmmakers and audiences alike, with their vibrant worlds, compelling characters, and timeless stories that have stood the test of time. By adopting more King Features properties to the big screen, studios can introduce many of these American staples to a new generation of fans while paying homage to the rich legacy of these classic comic strips.
He also adds:
Most King Features characters offer a mix of action, adventure, romance, and humor. The publisher has something for everyone, and by placing the right talents in their care, these IPs have the potential to become blockbuster franchises that stand the test of time.
Danilo lists 10 characters as an example which are suitable for the big-screen, potentially introducing them to a newer and younger generation. The Phantom is listed in this list. Danilo writes on the Phantom:
Created by Lee Falk in 1936, The Phantom is a classic superhero character that has been around for over 80 years. It was long run by its creator, who worked on the strip until he died in 1999. The character is still published worldwide. Hollywood gave us a film in 1996 directed by Simon Wincer with Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. The Phantom is a masked crime fighter fighting evil in Africa’s jungles. He’s akin to Batman in many aspects, but the character relies on the myth of his immortality to instill fear in evildoers. A newly revamped movie could explore the mythology of this character and his place in the modern world of the 21st century.
Also seen on the list are long existing characters owned by King Features Syndicate such as Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, Prince Valiant and Secret Agent X-9. The mix and themes of these characters would make for amazing blockbuster movies, some as a reboot and some for the first time on the big-screen!!!
