Pat Quinn’s Phantom #2 Original Cover Art Heads to Auction

An upcoming auction conducted by the United States–based Heritage Auctions will present original cover art created by Pat Quinn for Moonstone Books Phantom comic book series.

This comic book belongs to the mainstream monthly series simply titled “The Phantom”, published by Moonstone Books. Featuring new art and adventures, Moonstone’s run brought fresh, modern storytelling by placing him back in classic jungle adventure scenarios mixed with contemporary pulp action. The series was widely praised for honoring the character’s legacy while appealing to both longtime newspaper strip fans and modern comic book readers.

The regular series started publication in late 2003 (with issue #1 arriving in December 2003) and officially finished in January 2009 with the release of issue #26. Throughout its run, a total of 26 main editions were published, alongside several special one-shots, graphic novels, and spin-offs. Following the conclusion of this flagship title, Moonstone continued the character’s publication history with subsequent series such as “The Phantom: Ghost Who Walks”.

The series featured contributions from a talented rotation of writers and artists. Early issues were written by creators like Ben Raab, Rafael Nieves, and Chuck Dixon, before Mike Bullock took over scripting duties for a substantial portion of the run. The visual style was shaped by various illustrators, including Pat Quinn, Jerry DeCaire, Nick Derington, Rich Burchett, EricJ, and later regular artist Carlos Magno.

The artwork listed on Heritage Auctions features the original cover art for The Phantom #2, published by Moonstone Books in 2004. The striking composition puts the Phantom front and center, capturing a formidable entrance as he steps forward with both guns drawn. A towering, glowing skull dominates the background, framing the hero and giving him an ominous, pulp-inspired presence that immediately sets a dramatic tone for the issue.

The published cover can be seen below on the left, alongside the artwork listed for auction by Heritage Auctions on the right.

The physical piece consists of ink applied over printed blue lines on Bristol board, boasting an image area measuring 10 by 15 inches. The auction notes clarify that while this represents the final published cover artwork, the underlying media is ink over pre-printed lines rather than traditional ink over graphite. Adding to its collector appeal, the piece is signed by artist Pat Quinn directly in the top margin and is listed as being in excellent condition.

The listing also highlights a unique production connection to acclaimed artist John Cassaday via the use of his printed blue lines. This combination bridges the talents of distinct industry professionals for a memorable Moonstone cover.

The auction commences on the 5th of November 2026, found on the Heritage Auctions website HERE
