The Spanish publisher Dolmen Editorial, known for its focus on local material, has opened pre-orders for a new volume examining comic characters from the Golden Age of comic publishing.
Titled “Comic Strips Made in USA: 1929–1949”, the book is a comprehensive historical essay written by renowned Spanish comic theorist and critic Antoni Guiral and published by Dolmen Editorial. Serving as the second volume in a definitive three-part study dedicated to American newspaper comic strips, this book examines what is widely considered the Golden Age of the medium. Presented as an extra-large 288-page hardcover edition featuring full-color illustrations with Spanish text. The front cover can be seen below.

The book explores two pivotal decades during which newspaper strips evolved beyond simple comedic gags into complex storytelling. This period saw the rise and flourishment of diverse genres, including science fiction, pulp adventure, noir mystery, westerns, and fantasy. Guiral provides in-depth artistic and historical analyses of iconic series such as Buck Rogers, Tarzan, Dick Tracy, Flash Gordon, Terry and the Pirates, The Phantom, Prince Valiant, and The Spirit.
Through detailed documentation, the author analyzes the contributions of master creators and innovators like Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff, Chester Gould, Noel Sickles, and Will Eisner. Beyond detailing artistic techniques and narrative structures, the text traces syndicate distribution histories, key ghost artists, the socio-cultural impact of the strips, and their publication history within Spanish-language markets. A sample of internal pages can be seen below.
