Rare 1937 Brazilian Phantom Comic Book at Auction

Coming up for auction, as listed on the U.S.-based auction website Heritage Auctions, is an early Brazilian edition of a Phantom comic book.

The Phantom comic book up for auction is edition number 241-A of Ediçao Do Correio Universal, published in Brazil by Livraria Civilização on the 17th of November 1937. This vintage Golden Age publication features Brazilian translations reprinting classic newspaper comic strips created by Lee Falk and Ray Moore. Specifically, the issue reprints “The Sky Band” which originally ran in American newspapers from the 9th of November 1936, through to the 10th of April 1937.

The comic book was produced with a hard cover containing 48 pages, printed in a mix of black and white and color, with cover art by Calmon Barreto. Published in a landscape format, the comic measures 37.5cm x 27.5cm. Ediçao Do Correio Universal as seen in the auction listing can be seen below.

Presented in Fair/Good (FR/GD) condition, this Phantom comic book is rarely seen available for purchase. Mainly due to their limited circulation at time of publication, such editions highlight how American Golden Age comic-strip characters such as the Phantom was transmitted to, received by, and adapted for international readerships.
