Auction of Classic Defenders of the Earth Toys

At present, a collection of classic Defenders of the Earth toys and figures is being offered for auction by the US-based auction house Heritage Auctions.

The Defenders of the Earth cartoon series main characters are Flash Gordonthe Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar, who are all licensed by King Features Syndicate. Each character brings a unique set of skills and attributes to the team, allowing them to fight evil forces and protect the world from various threats. Flash Gordon is known for his bravery and quick thinking, while The Phantom embodies a legacy of justice and fearlessness. Meanwhile, Mandrake the Magician harnesses his mystical powers to outsmart adversaries, and Lothar, with his incredible strength, often serves as the muscle of the group.

In 1985, Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. (commonly referred to as Galoob) introduced a range of toys licensed by King Features Syndicate to coincide with the animated television series, Defenders of the Earth. Among the products released were action figures of the six primary characters, which included the Phantom, Flash Gordon, Mandrake the Magician, Lothar, Ming, and Garax. Additionally, various other toys inspired by the animated series were made available, including the Phantom Skull Copter, Defenders Claw Copter, Flash Swordship, Garax Swordship, and Mongor.

On offer at auction by Heritage Auctions is a complete set of six figures along with three of the five toys manufactured by Galoob in 1985, comprising a total of nine distinct pieces within this collection. The toys and figures available for auction can be seen below.

The condition of the collection as seen on the auction listing reads:

The boxed items show moderate to significant overall wear, including scuffing, dents, and corner compression, as well as surface wear such as creasing, veining, and areas of crushing. The contents appear unused in open boxes. The carded figures show moderate wear, with edge and corner wear, surface creasing, veining, and some warping. The Phantom and Mandrake cards show surface tears from lifted bubbles; those two figures are no longer sealed, while the remaining figures are unused and sealed on their original cardbacks. Bubbles across the lot show mild to moderate scuffing.

The auction for the collection of Defenders of the Earth toys and figures is scheduled to conclude on the 21st of June 2026 and can be found on the Heritage Auctions website HERE.
