The storyline of this edition…

In a future world set in the year 2040, the city-state of Metropia is under the corporate thumb of Maximum, Inc., led by the ruthless Rebecca Madison. Seeking to force the city council to approve her “Cyberville” project, Madison orders her subordinate, Graft, to incite riots using experimental “hypno-intensifiers” that manipulate the minds of the citizenry. Amidst this chaos, a young man named Kit Walker meets Guran, a mysterious friend of his late father. Guran reveals Kit’s secret heritage: for 500 years and twenty-three generations, the role of The Phantom, the “Ghost Who Walks”, has passed from father to son to fight injustice. Although hesitant and untrained, Kit dons a technologically advanced suit featuring holographic camouflage and dynamic resistance fabric to rescue his friends, Jenna and Tranh, from a burning virtual reality arcade.

During the rescue, Kit is targeted by the forces of Maximum, Inc., who harbor a deep-seated hatred for The Phantom, blaming the masked hero for the death of Rebecca’s husband sixteen years prior. Inside the burning “Battleworld” arcade, Kit survives a mental assault of virtual illusions and a physical attack by a security “biot” before successfully leading his friends to safety. His heroic actions are captured by a news camera, publicly announcing to the citizens of Metropia, and a vengeful Rebecca Madison, that The Phantom has finally returned. The story concludes with Kit Walker Jr. standing before the “Phantom Flame” in the Skull Cave, formally swearing an oath to take his place among his ancestors as the twenty-fourth Phantom.
