The Ghost Who Walks is officially returning to the screen! In a move that has sent ripples through the internet, a brand-new live-action the Phantom television series is officially in development.
The information and details published online, initially reported by Variety, provide a brief overview of the strategic plans for the Phantom television series.
The Creative Visionary: Reginald Hudlin
Leading the charge for this new adaptation is filmmaker Reginald Hudlin. If that name sounds familiar to comic fans, it should, Hudlin is the acclaimed writer who had an iconic run on Marvel’s Black Panther (2005–2008), where he famously married T’Challa to Storm.
Hudlin, whose recent credits include Candy Cane Lane and the documentary Sidney, is set to both produce and direct the series. His deep reverence for the industry and experience with legendary African-centric lore makes him a perfect fit for a character whose base of operations is the fictional African nation of Bangalla.
A Legacy Reborn
The project is being developed by King Features (a subsidiary of Hearst), the long-time home of Lee Falk’s 1936 creation. While the Phantom predates Batman and Superman, the modern challenge is bringing a 90-year-old icon into the current cultural zeitgeist.
C.J. Kettler, President of King Features, expressed high confidence in the project:
“The development of a live-action series… marks a pivotal expansion to meet the current cultural zeitgeist for this brand. By partnering with Reginald Hudlin… we are confident this adaptation will meet the high expectations of both longtime and new fans globally.”
For those who only remember the 1996 Billy Zane film (or perhaps the 2009 Syfy miniseries), here is a quick refresher on why the Phantom is unique:
- The First Costumed Hero: He was the first to wear the skintight suit and the “pupil-less” mask that became the industry standard.
- No Superpowers: Much like Batman, the Phantom relies on his wits, peak physical strength, expert marksmanship, and the “myth” of his immortality.
- A Family Business: The Phantom isn’t actually immortal. The mantle is passed down from father to son; the current Phantom is the 21st in a line that began in the 16th century.

The Phantom has a storied history on screen, having been adapted multiple times across various eras and formats:
- 1943: The character’s live-action debut in the classic theatrical serial The Phantom.
- 1986: A team-up era in the animated series Defenders of the Earth, where he fought alongside Mandrake the Magician and Flash Gordon.
- 1994: A futuristic, stylized take in the cult-favorite animated series Phantom 2040.
- 1996: The high-adventure feature film The Phantom, starring Billy Zane as the titular hero.
- 2009: A modern-day reimagining in Syfy’s two-part The Phantom miniseries.

The Phantom remains a global powerhouse with over 29 million readers worldwide, boasting massive fanbases in Australia, Scandinavia, India, and Brazil. With the recent success of Mad Cave Comics’ new Phantom run in 2025 and rumors of a “significant immersive location-based experience” coming later this year, King Features is clearly ready to turn the franchise into a modern multi-media juggernaut.
While casting details and a release date remain undisclosed, the participation of Hudlin indicates a series that will honor the origins of the Phantom, while also incorporating facets of the Phantom’s adventures into a contemporary context. All indications suggest a promising trajectory for the television series featuring the Phantom, heralding an exciting era for fans of the Phantom, both longtime and newcomers alike.
