Appearing on the Screen Rant website, we read a post written by Derek Garcia suggesting a variety of classic cartoons which would make ideal role-playing games (RPG).
Derek provides a list of yesteryear cartoons in his post titled ‘6 Classic Cartoon Series That Still Need Tabletop RPG Adaptations‘ which could be adapted to role-playing games. The cartoons noted are Gargoyles, Exosquad, He-Man, Scooby-Doo and Skeleton Warriors.
Phantom 2040 is also noted amongst the list which aired from 1994 thru till 1996 and is based on the 24th Phantom. Derek writes in his post on the history and theming of Phantom 2040:
One of the more unique cartoons of the 90s was Phantom 2040, and it could easily lend itself to a tabletop RPG. The show included cyberpunk and transhumanist elements, and given the popularity of cyberpunk tabletop RPG systems, Phantom 2040 could adapt to the medium easily. The show featured an environmentally devastated Earth, where the costumed vigilante called The Phantom battled Maximum Inc., a sinister megacorporation that could easily fit into Shadowrun or Cyberpunk Red. Many cyberpunk genre touchstones were present in Phantom 2040, including orbital colonies striving for independence, corporate controlled cyborg security officers, and AI that achieve independence and autonomy from their creators.
Derek writes on what a Phantom 2040 role-playing game may look like:
While the show may be most remembered for its unique aesthetic, with designs from Peter Chung, the creator of Aeon Flux, the bleak subject matter and rich world building set Phantom 2040 apart as much as its gaunt cast. A tabletop RPG would need to expand character options, beyond masked heroes like The Phantom and Shadow Panther. Allies like the hacker Sparks, a character with a genetically engineered dog and an armored Enforcer suit like Sagan Cruz, or a rebel AI “biot” like Heisenberg, could help round out the player character archetypes. Maximum Inc. is an obvious central antagonist, but other foes could include organized crime and terrorists like Sean One.
The Phantom 2040 cartoon series certainly contains a creative look of what the Phantoms legacy may look like into the future, one filled with futuristic cities and technology. A role-playing game could easily take any shape or form, only limited by the creators imagination.
