The Vultures, one of the most infamous criminal organizations in Lee Falk’s the Phantom comic series, have left a lasting impression on readers as a symbol of greed, corruption, and ruthless ambition. As recurring adversaries of the Phantom, the Vultures appear in numerous storylines, engaging in nefarious activities ranging from smuggling to political manipulation.
The Vultures first appeared in the Phantom story titled ‘The Vultures’ in 1971, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by Sy Barry. This debut story introduced them as a shadowy cabal operating behind the scenes of the criminal underworld. Their slogan, “We are The Vultures, feeding on the weak and corrupt”, encapsulated their predatory ethos. In this tale, the 4th Phantom uncovers their operations while investigating a series of mysterious disappearances linked to their smuggling and extortion rackets.
They can be readily identified by their shaved heads, reminiscent of Vultures (bird of prey that scavenges on carrion) and by the conspicuous letter “V” tattooed on their foreheads.

The Vultures continued to appear sporadically in subsequent years, often in minor roles or as part of larger villain alliances. Their adaptability and ability to re-emerge despite repeated defeats underline their resilience as a criminal entity.
Throughout these stories, the Vultures embody the enduring fight against organized crime and corruption. Their cunning, vast resources, and willingness to exploit global instability make them a formidable adversary for the Phantom. However, their overconfidence and underestimation of the Ghost Who Walks often lead to their undoing.
