Early on in the German economic miracle, comic series found their way onto the pages of daily newspapers and magazines as welcome entertainment – long before a local comic book culture emerged. The sales model was adopted from the USA by King Features and successfully established in Germany by the Frankfurt-based company Bulls.

With the dossier in this issue of REDDITION, we look behind the scenes of the almost forgotten success story of these comics in Germany and document the emergence of newspaper comics in the USA, their establishment in Germany after the Second World War and their heyday from the 1950s onwards. These newspaper publications can be documented so precisely because previously unpublished information, old running cards and the press archive of the German licensor Bulls were available to us for research purposes.

In addition to portraits of bestselling series such as Flash Gordon , Prinz Eisenherz , Star Wars , Hägar , Calvin and Hobbes or Modesty Blaise and an overview of Franco-Belgian series such as Suske and Wiske , Tintin or Bessy in newspapers, we also present lesser-known series successes and lots of background information about them traditional syndicate business.
