Dentro de la Viñeta (which translates to Inside the Pane) magazine was published by Dude Comics in Spain from 1999 thru till 2006. The magazine series contains 32 editions and was one of the most prominent Spanish comics journalism and criticism publications.
Dentro de la Viñeta was one of Spain’s most influential comic journalism and criticism publications. Originating in Avilés, Asturias, in 1993 as an fan-run fanzine spawned from a local radio show, it initially focused on superhero culture, manga, and role-playing games. In May 1999, it transitioned into a professional monthly magazine published by Dude Comics in collaboration with the Asociación de Amigos de la Historieta de Asturias (AAHA). Directed by Jorge Iván Argiz and artist-critic Ángel de la Calle, this professional incarnation ran for 32 issues through September 2006, bridging the gap between mainstream comic readers, academic scholarship, and international creators.
Subtitled “La revista mensual del cómic: estudios, noticias y entrevistas”, the magazine distinguished itself by moving far beyond casual commentary into serious comic theory and industry coverage. Each issue featured in-depth thematic essays, artistic career breakdowns, and comprehensive interviews with legendary figures across American, European, and Spanish comics—including Chris Bachalo, Roy Thomas, Milo Manara, and Mike Mignola. It also served as a vital media partner to the renowned Jornadas Internacionales del Cómic Villa de Avilés convention, featuring contributions from prominent Spanish critics such as Lorenzo Díaz, Yexus, Norman Fernández, and Alejandro Martínez Viturtia.
Despite an often irregular publishing schedule, Dentro de la Viñeta left an enduring legacy as a cornerstone of late 1990s and early 2000s Spanish comic culture. By treating comic art with critical rigor while remaining accessible to general fans, it played a key role in legitimizing comic scholarship as a respected discipline in Spain. Today, it stands as both an essential archive of creator interviews from that era and a defining milestone of Dude Comics’ independent publishing legacy.
Edition number 4 of Dentro de la Viñeta (Número Cuatro), published in 1999 by Dude Comics for 250 pesetas, features cover artwork of The Phantom (El Hombre Enmascarado) before a skull motif, illustrated by Spanish artist Enrique Torres. A strip of preview panels across the top sets up the issue’s main theoretical features and retrospectives. The centerpiece of the issue is a tribute to the Phantom’s creator, Lee Falk (“para los que llegaron tarde”), offering newer readers a comprehensive overview of his legacy following his passing in March 1999.
