The Alter Ego Magazine Series was originally founded in the USA as a Fanzine by Jerry Bails in 1961, and later taken over by Roy Thomas when it became an official magazine published by TwoMorrows Publishing. The Fawcett Collectors of America Fanzine is published as part of Alter Ego.
Alter Ego Magazine is dedicated to the Golden and Silver age of comic books and comic book creators from the 1930s to late 1960s.
What makes the origin of this magazine quite fascinating is that Jerry Bails contacted readers whose letters had appeared in DC’s ‘The Brave and the Bold’ issue number 35, the first comic book to print readers’ full mailing addresses in its letter column. Some of those readers were active in other fandoms, with those readers helping to spread the word about Alter Ego.
Alter Ego publications are split into 3 Volumes:
- Volume No1 – 10 Issues – 1961 thru 1969
- Volume No2 – 5 Issues – 1997 thru 1999
- Volume No3 – 1999 – thru to present
The Phantom made at least 2 appearances in the series, not on the cover, but in articles within.
#37 – 2004
#144 – 2017
