A Verdadeira Lenda Do Fantrauma

A Verdadeira Lenda Do Fantrauma (which translates to The True Legend of Fantrauma) was published by Edições BRT in Brazil. This comic was part of a wave of independent, small-scale press runs that bridged the gap between amateur fanzines and professional publishing. Because it was produced with a “limited print run” and aimed at an adult audience (noted as unsuitable for those under 21), surviving copies are considered rare artifacts of Brazilian comic history. It remains a fascinating cultural footnote, illustrating how global icons are localized and deconstructed by independent artists to reflect domestic social anxieties.

The comic is a prime example of the “Udigrudi” movement, a phonetic Brazilian Portuguese adaptation of the word “underground”. Flourishing during the late 1970s and early 1980s, this counter-culture scene emerged as a transgressive response to the social and political constraints of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Artists within this movement used crude humor, intentional aesthetic “ugliness” and satirical subversion to challenge both government censorship and the polished standards of mainstream media.

A Verdadeira Lenda do Fantrauma is a deliberate parody of the Phantom. The cover immediately establishes its irreverent tone by mocking the creator of the Phantom, stating “Nem Lee Falk Ousou Escrever Esta Bicheira” (“Not Even Lee Falk Dared To Write This Rot”). By transforming the stoic “Ghost Who Walks” into “Fantrauma” and promising “Drama E Seco Em Dose Cavalar” (“Drama And Sex In Massive Doses”) the creators stripped the character of his colonial-era nobility, reimagining him through a lens of urban grit and adult cynicism.

The artwork features satirical interpretations of the Phantom’s traditional supporting cast, including a caricature of Guran and a skeptical rendition of his wolf, Devil. A thought bubble from the horse, Hero, uses the slang term “chifrudo” (“cuckold”), signaling the adult-oriented and mocking nature of the content. This visual style was synonymous with the independent collectives of the era, such as those in the São Paulo and Campinas regions, who favored a raw, dirty comic style over the clean lines found in the mainstream American and European imports of the time.

The bottom right corner notes it is an “Edição Histórica! Tiragem Limitada!” (“Historical Edition! Limited Print Run!”). Because these were small-scale, independent fanzine-style professional printings, surviving copies are quite scarce today.

A Verdadeira Lenda Do Fantrauma was republished in a book release by Pegasus Books and Pegasus Studios in Brazil in 2023. Titled “Udigrudi: Reserva Especial!” (translating to “Udigrudi: Special Reserve!”), the book is a modern tribute to the Brazilian underground comix scene. Published in 2023, the 150 page anthology curated by Tony Fernandes is designed to replicate the rebellious spirit of the original 1970s and 80s “Udigrudi” movement. The cover explicitly labels it as “adult humor” and a “limited edition for collectors”, signaling its niche appeal to those who remember the transgressive, low-brow satire of the past. It leans heavily into the “marginal” aesthetic, featuring a chaotic collage of characters, pop culture parodies, and intentional “dirty” art styles that defined the era of independent Brazilian fanzines and alternative press.

The book is particularly notable for featuring the “Fantrauma” alongside a “load of satires” targeting various iconic figures and genres. The cover includes a variety of cheeky references, such as a satirical take on Adam and Eve (“The Real Drama of Adam and Eve”) and a group shot of distorted superheroes in the bottom right.

The humor remains deliberately provocative and crude, with speech bubbles referencing “psychologists” and “cuckolds”, maintaining the movement’s tradition of deconstructing heroic myths and social norms. By packaging these underground sensibilities into a high-page-count “Special Reserve”, the release acts as both a piece of nostalgia for long-time readers and a preservation effort for a uniquely Brazilian subgenre of comic history.
