Slatkine BD

Le Fantome is published by Slatkine B. D. in Switzerland in 1981. The album style comic book was the only edition published in the series, which was produced to be sold in France, with all text found within in French.


Editions Slatkine was established by Michel-Édouard Slatkine in Geneva, Switzerland in 1964 as a publishing house. The company manages all aspects of book publications, including publishing, printing and distribution.

A varied amount of subject matter are published by Editions Slatkine, including history, religion, photography, sports, gastronomy, poetry, novels, social science, humor, guides, dictionaries and many more. They also reprint rare and out-of-print works and academic focused publications.

Their books are distributed to a variety of countries including Switzerland, France, Belgium, UK, Canada and USA. Languages published include English, French, German, Italian and Hebrew.

With a catalogue of over 5,000 titles, Editions Slatkine is still publishing books to this day.


Le Fantome has a laminated hardcover in color with 84 black and white pages measuring 22.5cm x 30.5cm. It contains the classic Phantom comic strip story ‘The Prisoner of the Himalayas’, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by Ray Moore. Throughout the comic book, we see the word ‘prisonier’ spelt incorrectly, it should be spelt ‘prisonnier’. The front and back cover can be seen below.

An informative introduction covering 5 pages is found at the front of the book titled ‘Le Fantome Du Bengale’ written by Edouard Francois in French text. It contains information on the Phantoms creation story plus aspect on how the character was created. Alongside text are als0 comic strip images illustrated by Ray Moore, in both English and French.

An edition number 1 is printed on the spine of the Le Fantome comic book, however additional editions weren’t produced for the series.

Slatkine B. D. published a variety of comic books featuring an array of characters including Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant, Cisco Kid, Terry and the Pirates, Red Barry, Wash Tubbs and King of the Mounted Police. These comic books were published in the 1980s and into the early 1990s, as either a one off comic book or as a multi-comic book series.
