O Tico Colecção De Banda Desenhada Para Adultos

O Tico Colecção De Banda Desenhada Para Adultos (which translates to O Tico: A Collection of Comics for Adults) is a comic book series published by Portugal Press in Portugal commencing in 1974 thru till 1975. A total of 12 comic books were published, containing a variety of characters per edition, including the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Tiffany Jones, Jane, Romeo Brown, Buz Sawyer, Dr. Kildare and Secret Agent X-9.

The O Tico Colecção De Banda Desenhada Para Adultos comic book series was introduced on the 19th of December 1974, with its inaugural issue marketed exclusively to an adult audience. Although the covers, illustrated by Carlos Alberto Santos, featured erotic themes, the comic strips themselves were traditional stories sourced from American and English newspapers and previously published in Portuguese magazines. The English series, Romeo Brown, Tiffany Jones, and Jane are notable in this context for their more sensual depiction of female characters, despite being aimed at a general readership.

The collection is distinguished by the diverse range and high quality of its published comics, which are unfortunately compromised by the poor quality of the paper and printing. The first episode of Dogfight Dixon is a case in point, with some images being nearly illegible. This is particularly regrettable given the historical significance of the comics publication. The 12-issue series was published monthly, with each edition consisting of 20 pages, and concluded on the 27th of March 1975.

The Phantom appeared on the cover and within the pages of edition number 6 under his local title of ‘Fantasma’, released on the 13th of February 1975. The comic book contains 20 black and white pages measuring 17cm x 24cm with Portuguese text. The classic Phantom story ‘The Jungle Patrol’, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by Wilson McCoy was published.
