O Globo Juvenil

O Globo Juvenil was published by O Globo in Brazil from 1937 thru till 1952. 2095 editions were released containing a mix of comic book characters, including Mandrake the Magician, Superman, Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant and more. The Phantom was also featured.


O Globo was established on the 29th of July 1925 as a newspaper published by Irineu Marinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s parent company is Grupo Globo, also established by Irineu, a month earlier on the 25th of June 1925. Irineu died a few weeks after O Globo was established, with the company passing on to his son, Roberto Marinho.

Roberto successfully grew Grupo Globo into a multi-media company which included O Globo, TV Globo, Rádio Globo, Editora Globo and other subsidiaries. O Globo is still in existence to this day.


The Phantom first appears in O Globo Juvenil edition number 12, published on the 20th of July, 1937, in a newspaper format. It contains the Lee Falk and Ray Moore classic, ‘The Sky Band’. Each edition didn’t contain a full Phantom story, but broken down into several editions. Edition number 12 can be seen below.

On the 10th of March 1950, commencing from edition number 1987, O Globo Juvenil received a name change, now named Novo O Globo Juvenil. These editions contain more pages then O Globo Juvenil and published full comic strip stories.

The Phantom would make his first appearance in edition number 1998 in 1950 and would appear in 22 editions until it’s final edition with number 2051 in 1952 before changing publishers. The front cover of edition number 1998 can be seen below.

Commencing from edition number 2052, published on the 30th of August 1952, Rio Gráfica e Editora (RGE) took-over publishing of Novo O Globo Juvenil, releasing a further 44 edition until the series completion in November 1954 with edition number 2095.

The Phantom makes his first appearance in Novo O Globo Juvenil published by RGE in edition number 2053 on the 13th of September, 1952. It contains 36 black and white pages, measuring 17.5cm x 26cm. The Lee Falk and Ray Moore classic Phantom story, ‘The Jungle Patrol’ is published. The cover can be seen below.
