Les Éditions Héritage

Le Fantome was published by Les Éditions Héritage in Quebec, Canada from January 1975 thru till December 1977. 24 comic book editions were published in the series, containing cover art and comic strip stories as found in the Gold Key/King Comics/Charlton Comics series published in USA from 1962 thru till 1977.


Les Éditions Héritage is a publishing house established in Quebec, Canada in April, 1968 by Antoine Mireault, Norbert Mireault and Maurice Poirier.

In 1968, the same year Les Éditions Héritage is established, Payette & Payette (founded in 1914 by Jacques Payette) purchase the publishing house, later renamed in 1969 to Payette & Simms, with Les Éditions Héritage banding continuing.

From 1968 till 1987, Les Éditions Héritage held the licensing right to translate a variety of Marvel Comics into French, publishing comic book characters such as Ironman, Spider-Man, Captain America and Fantastic Four.

In 1977, Les Éditions Héritage also gained the licensing rights to publish DC comic characters in French, publishing comic book characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Flash.

Les Éditions Héritage also published a variety of King Features Syndicate comic book characters from 1975, including the Phantom, Flash Gordon and Mandrake the Magician.


Le Fantome is published in black and color, with each edition containing 36 pages and measuring 26cm x 17cm. Text found within the comic books are in French.

5 Album style publications were also released by Les Éditions Héritage, containing unsold copies of the regular Le Fantome series as seen above. The first 2 editions are titled ‘ComicOrama’ with the remainder 3 titled ‘L’Album Du Collectionneur’. The edition number are:

  • 1071 – containing edition numbers 3 and 4 (also contains 2 Flash Gordon editions by Les Éditions Héritage, numbers 3 and 4)
  • 1098 – containing edition numbers 4, 9, 10 and 11
  • 2002 – containing edition numbers 13, 14, 15 and 16
  • 2008 – containing edition numbers 17, 18, 19 and 20
  • 2035 – containing edition numbers 21, 22, 23 and 24
