Le Fantôme du Bengale (which translates to The Phantom of Bengal) is a comic book series published by Editions SAGE (Société Anonyme Générale d’Édition) in Paris, France from 1949 thru till 1953. The series contains 50 editions published on a monthly basis exclusively featuring the Phantom. The series contains daily comic strip stories first appearing in USA newspapers, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by either Ray Moore or Wilson McCoy.
Le Fantôme du Bengale comic books are printed with 16 to 20 black and white pages, with color only seen on the front covers. The size of the comic books changed throughout the series, 19.5cm x 27.5cm for the first 18 editions, 18cm x 27cm for editions 19 thru to 21 and finally 10.5cm x 20.5cm for editions 22 thru to 50.
All comic covers contain the title of the series ‘Le Fantôme du Bengale’, with a profile image of the Phantom seen in the ‘O’ of the word ‘Fantôme’. An edition number is printed on all front covers, with the Phantom printed in his red costume as he’s known in France. Unsold copies were compiled into 6 albums with unique cover art that differs from the original series seen above, containing approximately 200 black and white pages measuring 19.5cm x 27.5cm for the first 2 editions, with the remaining 4 editions measuring 15cm x 20.5cm. The albums weren’t solely dedicated to the Phantom, with King of the Royal Mounted comic strips also found in the albums.
