Fantomens Universum (which translates to The Phantom’s Universe) is a celebrated series of character dossiers published in the Swedish Fantomen comic book series by Egmont Publishing. Unlike traditional comic strip narratives, these features are dedicated text-and-art profiles that provide detailed backgrounds and lore on the extensive cast of allies, villains, historical figures, and supporting characters surrounding the Phantom, designed to be cut out of the comic and collected seperatly.
The main run of Fantomens Universum in the Swedish Fantomen magazine commenced in issue 1/2014 and concluded its regular magazine publication in issue 25-26/2016. The feature was created and written by comics scholar and Fantomen editor Andreas Eriksson, who pitched the concept to offer readers a deeper look into the lore of the franchise. While its core run in Fantomen comic books spanned three years, additional legacy entries and reprints occasionally appeared later, such as special additions in hardcover collector editions (Den inbundna årgången).
Each entry in Fantomens Universum was presented as an illustrated dossier printed on a full comic book page. Rather than reusing older panel art from previous comic releases, every profile featured brand-new, original artwork specifically commissioned for the series. The standard format included a full-body character portrait accompanied by biographical text detailing the character’s origins, historical impact, relationships to the various line of Phantoms, and notable story appearances. A sample can be seen below.

This Fantomens Universum profile page is structured into distinct biographical and publication categories designed to systematically index character lore. The top left section features a structured data block containing standard demographic and narrative fields, such as the character’s name, occupation, nationality, civil status, known allies, place of birth, known relatives, operational base, and first appearance details (including the specific issue number).
Below this metadata block is a multi-paragraph narrative history section detailing the character’s origin, plot motivations, key storyline events, interactions with main cast members, and final resolution. Visually, the page is categorized into dedicated artistic zones, including a prominent full-length character portrait on the right, a reprinted comic panel snippet at the bottom right, and formal credit citations noting both the portrait artist and the dossier author.
The distinctive visual look of Fantomens Universum was achieved through contributions from prominent artists. Henrik Jonsson served as the primary artist for the majority of the profiles during the 2014–2016 run. Other notable Swedish illustrators also provided specialized portraits for various entries, including Elin Jonsson, Henrik Sahlström, and Reine Rosenberg. Their artwork gave the dossiers a cohesive aesthetic across the magazine’s run.
The series covered a broad spectrum of the lore, beginning with the closest figures to the Phantom. Major primary and supporting characters featured in the dossiers included:
- The Phantom Lineage: The 21st Phantom, the 17th Phantom, and historical predecessors.
- The Main Household & Companions: Diana Palmer-Walker, Guran, Hero (the horse), and Devil (the mountain wolf).
- Allies & Historical Supporting Cast: Joonkar, Vasti Riba, Colonel Worbu, President Luaga, and the Jungle Patrol officers.
In addition to heroes and companions, Fantomens Universum highlighted classic enemies, historic figureheads, and obscure characters from classic Lee Falk strips and Scandinavian Team Fantomen stories. Profiles in this category featured:
- Major Villains & Antagonists: Dogai Singh, Sandal Singh, The Scarecrow, Akuma (The Demon), The Black Carnation, Miss Mist, and Princess Sin.
- Historical & Unique Figures: Redbeard, Queen Karola of Kula-Ku, Amine van der Lööwe, Chandra Sykharn, Carolin Benson, Minerva Brooks, Joanne Fitzgerald, Phoenix, Maggie Crabtree, Baldy, Prince Grigor, and Kate Sommerset.
This comprehensive scope made Fantomens Universum one of the most complete reference guides to the Phantom’s universe ever compiled within the Swedish magazine’s history.
