Fantom

Fantom was published by Hrvatski Dnevnik in Yugoslavia from around March 1937 thru till 1938, with 32 editions released over this time. This series is considered to be the first Phantom comic book series solely dedicated to the Phantom ever published, and as such, not many comics from this series are known to have survived.

Fantom comic books are printed in black and white, measuring 20cm x 28.5cm and containing approximately 20 pages. Color is only found on the covers of the comic books.

We find local retail shop advertisements consuming the internal front and back covers, and also on the outside back cover.

4 stories appeared in this series, with the comic number sequence reset as each story was released (with a new cover image produced). The Phantom comic strips found in the series are taken from previously published strips appearing in the Hrvatski Dnevnik newspaper.

  • 1st Sequence – The Singh Brotherhood – 9 comics
  • 2nd Sequence – The Sky Band – 5 comics
  • 3rd Sequence – War in the Jungle – 6 comics

The cover images of each sequence changed, however within each sequence, the cover image remained the same, just the comic book cover color was altered from comic-to-comic. A sample of these covers can be seen below
