Den Förste Fantomen

Den Förste Fantomen (translating to ‘The First Phantom’) was published by Semic Press in Sweden in 1971. Fully licensed by King Features Syndicate, the softcover comic book measures 21cm x 28cm and contains 84 black and white internal pages. The front and back covers can be seen below, with the front cover illustrated by Rolf Gohs.

The title of the story found within the comic book can be found on the cover, ‘Fången i Himalaya’, which translates to ‘The Prisoner of the Himalayas’. The Prisoner of the Himalayas is the Lee Falk and Ray Moore Phantom story first published in newspapers in 1938.

Den Förste Fantomen is based on the Phantom comic book published by Nostalgia Press in USA in 1969, as part of ‘The Golden Age Of The Comics’ series.

We find a similar styled image to that originally illustrated by Ray Moore on the USA version of The Prisoner of the Himalayas by Nostalgia Press, on the back cover of the 1969 Christmas Album by Åhlen & Åkerlunds Förlags AB, published in Sweden.

The back cover image of the 1969 Christmas Album is published in the same year as that of the Nostalgia Press comic cover.
