Bera-Na-Liva

Bera-Na-Liva is the title of the Phantom comic book series produced by Vitikomiks Publishers in Suva, Fiji in 1978. 7 editions were published in the series, which were fully licensed by King Features Syndicate. They were published in Fijian language.

Bera-Na-Liva comic books only contain color on the front cover, with all other pages published in black and white. They generally contain 40 pages and measure 19cm x 26cm. Of the 40 pages, only approximately 29 pages contain Phantom comic strips, with the other pages dedicated to advertisements, educational and general information articles.

The comics were distributed across Fiji by ‘Burns Philp (South Sea) Co Ltd’ who were based in Suva, Fiji. Bera-Na-Liva were sold in Burns Philp stores, with locations including Suva, Lautoka, Labasa, Sigatoka, Levuka, Savusavu and Taveuni. Other select outlets also sold the comics.

An introductory page was published on the inside front cover. Below we see the inside cover of Bera-Na-Liva edition number 2. An introductory message by the publisher is first seen, then information about ‘The Sun’ (in both English and Fijian), a quote, then finally publishing licensing information.

A ‘For Those Who Came In Late’ comic strip introduction can also be found within each comic book, very similar to those found in Frew Publications comics from the same era. Two examples can be seen below.

3 of the 7 comic books in the series can be seen below, with the edition number printed on the front cover.
