A Saga do Casamento do Fantasma

A Saga do Casamento do Fantasma (which translates to The Phantom’s Wedding Saga) comic book was published by Editorial Kalaco in Brazil in 2011. The album style comic book celebrates one of the most monumental milestones in the comics history, the long-awaited wedding of The Phantom (known in Portuguese as O Fantasma).

Editorial Kalaco (often referred to simply as Editora Kalaco) is an independent Brazilian publishing house dedicated to the preservation, publication, and celebration of comic books, pop culture history, and graphic literature. Founded by influential Brazilian comic artist, writer, and editor Franco de Rosa, who previously co-founded Opera Graphica, the imprint was established to cater to dedicated collectors and enthusiasts of classic panel fiction. Operating primarily out of São Paulo, Kalaco carved out a distinct niche within the Brazilian publishing landscape by bridging the gap between archival international syndicated strips and native Brazilian comic history.

A core focus of Editorial Kalaco’s catalog is high-quality, deluxe restorations of vintage newsprint classics. The publisher specialized in acquiring rights for iconic newspaper characters, particularly classic adventure and superhero strip material like The Phantom (O Fantasma) and Mandrake the Magician, packaging them into hardcovers and thick collector trade paperbacks. In addition to bringing classic American syndicate material to Brazilian audiences with careful editorial context, Kalaco gained respect for publishing retrospective art books, non-fiction biographies about comic creators, and detailed historical analyses written by prominent local comic historians.

Beyond historical reissues, Editorial Kalaco actively supported original Brazilian comic talents and genre anthologies. The house published national horror compilations, sci-fi projects, and graphic novel adaptations of literary works created by veteran and emerging Brazilian cartoonists. Though maintaining a relatively boutique output compared to massive mainstream media houses, Kalaco’s commitment to rich editorial extras, premium paper stock, and archival significance made it a respected name among Latin American comic purists and historical collectors.

A Saga do Casamento do Fantasma comic book is formatted in a large hardcover with 80 pages (64 in black and white and 16 in color) measuring approximately 24.5cm x 31.5cm with Portuguese text. The front cover and back covers are featured below, with the front cover containing an illustration by Sy Barry.

The underlying storyline, titled “The Wedding of the Phantom”, was created by legendary Phantom creator Lee Falk and features artwork by classic series artist Sy Barry, both of whose credits appear at the top of the cover. Originally published in newspaper syndicated strips in 1977, this historic storyline follows the 21st Phantom proposing to and marrying his long-time sweetheart, Diana Palmer, deep within the skull cave of the Bengalla jungle. The ceremony gathered an array of iconic guests, including jungle chiefs, royalty, and even Mandrake the Magician.

The cover illustration prominently captures the pivotal wedding moment, showing the Phantom in his traditional purple suit lifting his bride, Diana, who wears a white gown and veil. Behind them, a diverse group of well-wishing wedding guests applauds, including Mandrake the Magician in his signature top hat and cape, along with various jungle leaders and friends. Surrounding the inner cover illustration is a patterned border filled with repeating skull icons, emphasizing the hero’s legendary moniker as “The Ghost Who Walks”.
