The Phantom Iron-On

The Phantom Iron-On transfer was produced in the USA in 1947. Licensed by King Features Syndicate, the producer of the Iron-On transfer is unclear, as is how it was released to the general public.

The Phantom Iron-On transfer is produced in full color and is printed on tissue paper. It’s designed to be transferred onto a fabric garment by simply placing the image face down, before applying a hot iron onto the back of the tissue paper. The heat then transfers the image onto the garment when the paper is lifted off.

The image seen in the Phantom Iron-On transfer is in the style of artist Ray Moore. At the base of the image, we find copyright wording ‘© 1947 King Features Syn’.

It’s believed that a series of King Features Syndicate comic book characters were featured, with Iron-On transfers in a similar design produced in the same year. An example can be seen below, a Flash Gordon Iron-On transfer produced in 1947.
