Phantom Stop Uranium Mining Poster

The Phantom Stop Uranium Mining poster was produced by Without Authority in Australia in 1978. The poster was produced to campaign and protest against uranium mining in Australia, and was produced together with our Australian themed posters with a similar message. The poster is unlicensed by King Features Syndicate.

The one-sided screen print poster is printed in color on heavy stock paper. The poster depicts the Phantom with a jungle background wearing a ‘Stop Uranium Mining’ badge on his chest. It’s illustrated by Tony Chinnery and printed by Joanne Horniman who were part of the Without Authority organization at the time.

The text found at the top of the poster reads:

I swear on the skull of my anti-uranium badge to devote myself to the overthrow of Frazer and to spend my life in the destruction of capitalism and the state.

Two varying posters were produced. The earlier poster contains the word ‘Frazer’ in the text, however the later produced poster has the word ‘Frazer’ crossed out and the word ‘Hawke’ printed above it. This was due to the change of Australian Prime Ministers at the time of the campaign being in place.

  • The poster seen below on the left was produced in 1978, measures 54.5cm x 40cm and contains the words ‘Without Authority 79’ in the lower right. The name ‘Frazer’ is seen in the text.
  • The poster seen below on the right was produced in 1984, measures 58.5cm x 45cm and contains the words ‘Without Authority Kyogle’ in the lower right. The name ‘Frazer’ is crossed out and the word ‘Hawke’ printed above it.

The badge seen on the Phantoms chest was produced by Without Authority, made of tin measuring 3.8cm in diameter. The front and back of the badge can be seen below.
