Mythos Editora Collectibles

Based in São Paulo, Mythos Editora was founded in 1996 by Dorival Vitor Lopes and Hélio Porto (Oliveira, 2023). The company was born out of the Art & Comics Studio, a prominent agency responsible for representing Brazilian comic artists to major international comic markets like the United States and Europe (Oliveira, 2023). Leveraging this deep industry expertise, Mythos quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the Brazilian sequential art landscape. Beyond publishing under its own banner, the company carved out a unique business model by acting as a highly specialized packager and production house for other media giants. Most notably, Mythos handles the translation, graphic design, and editorial preparation of Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Mauricio de Sousa’s Turma da Mônica titles for Panini Brasil, making its editorial staff a major invisible force behind the country’s mainstream comic distribution (Oliveira, 2023; Rückert, 2024).

As an independent publisher, Mythos Editora is widely celebrated for preserving and expanding the legacy of Sergio Bonelli Editore titles in Brazil. When the iconic Italian western character Tex Willer faced publishing instability in the mid-1990s, Mythos assumed the license and successfully stabilized the franchise, expanding it into a massive portfolio of diverse formats, such as Tex Coleção, Tex Edição de Ouro, and Tex Graphic Novel (Antunes, 2019; Oliveira, 2023). Alongside Tex, Mythos became the definitive Brazilian home for other Italian masterpieces like Zagora, Dylan Dog, Martin Mystère, and Julia. This dedication to European and classic adventure styles earned the publisher a fiercely loyal, generational reader base that values high production standards and continuity preservation in a market heavily dominated by American superheroes.

In addition to its Italian western and mystery lines, Mythos Editora has maintained a robust presence in the independent American and British comic book scenes. The publisher became the primary home for Mike Mignola’s Hellboy and the expanded B.P.R.D. universe in Brazil, alongside classic sci-fi properties from the iconic British anthology 2000 AD, including Judge Dredd. Over the decades, the publisher’s output has fluctuated from budget-friendly newsstand paperbacks to premium, oversized hardcover graphic novels tailored for specialized comic shops and collectors. By bridging the gap between historical European serials and modern alternative graphic novels, Mythos Editora has secured an enduring and multi-faceted legacy within South American popular culture.

Mythos Editora has produced an array of Phantom collectibles, some of which are provided complimentary with the purchase of select Phantom comic books, while others are available for a fee.
