Hutch Recharge Phonecard

The Phantom Recharge Phonecard was produced by Hutch (Hutchison CAT Wireless Multimedia) in Thailand in 2004. The phonecard functions as a mobile phone prepaid top-up card, part of the “TOP SUPER HERO ACTION” phonecard series, fully licensed by King Features Syndicate.

Hutchison CAT Wireless MultiMedia Ltd. was formed in 2000 as a joint venture between Hutchison Telecom and CAT Telecom Public Company Limited, which was formerly known as The Communications Authority of Thailand. The company was established to provide exclusive marketing services for CAT Telecom’s CDMA mobile telecommunications across 25 provinces, focusing on the Bangkok Metropolitan Area as well as Thailand’s central, east coast, and west coast regions. In late 2002, the joint venture introduced the marketing service brand “Hutch”, and officially launched its services in 2003 to deliver advanced voice and high-speed data wireless capabilities to the Thai market.

Operating primarily on CDMA2000 1X technology, Hutch aimed to offer consumers an integrated experience of communication, information, and mobile entertainment. The brand was recognized for introducing innovative telecom solutions to Southeast Asia, such as its 2004 debut of precision location-based services that utilized Qualcomm’s gpsOne hybrid Assisted GPS and the BREW system. Additionally, Hutch supported the local tech industry by creating the M-sites program, which encouraged developers to build mobile multimedia content like digital accessories, WAP services, and downloadable applications. Ultimately, as mobile telecommunications standards shifted globally, Hutch Thailand officially ended its CDMA services in 2013.

The Phantom Recharge Phonecard is composed of durable plastic, showcasing the Phantom in vibrant color on its front side. The reverse side of the card includes printed instructions in black, along with a silver scratch-off section for activation.

The card presents a classic, full-body representation of the Phantom, depicted in a hands-on-hips “power pose”. He’s illustrated in the traditional purple suit, complemented by blue-and-black striped trunks, twin holstered M1911 pistols, and the distinguished skull belt buckle. In the top-left corner, the phrase “The PHANTOM” is prominently displayed, while the copyright notice “© 2004 King Features Syndicate, Inc. / Hearst Holdings, Inc.” is positioned along the bottom left edge. The large blue text taking up the entire left margin reads “100 บาท”, providing 100 Baht of prepaid credit to the user’s mobile account.

The reverse side of the card illustrates instructions on “How To Top Up” in both Thai and English languages, accompanied by a silver scratch-off section that reveals a one-time-use password, necessary for accessing the mobile prepaid credit service. The particulars are provided by Hutch concerning mobile network requirements, specifically under “CDMA BY CAT”. Here, CAT denotes the Communications Authority of Thailand, which has since been integrated into the National Telecom Public Company Limited. Hutch leveraged CAT’s infrastructure to operate a CDMA network within the nation prior to the eventual phasing out of CDMA technology in favor of GSM/LTE standards.
