Glenwood Ltd. Ring Set

The Phantom Ring Set was produced by Glenwood Ltd., manufactured in Hong Kong and distributed in New Zealand in 1979. The set is made up of 5 rings, all containing unique designs produced in small quantities, licensed by King Features Syndicate.

Information on the ring set and it’s history is very limited. Nestled in the heart of Hong Kong’s New Territories, Glenwood Ltd operated from the Shing Chuen Industrial Building at 25-27 Shing Wan Road in Tai Wai, Sha Tin. The company’s official listing in the Hong Kong Business Directory (Ref. No.: e173-55) provides one of the few concrete pieces of information about its existence. Beyond this tantalizing morsel of data, Glenwood Ltd. remains shrouded in mystery, with virtually no historical records or background information available to shed light on its operations or legacy.

The only other clues to the company’s output are the branding markings found on the rings they produced. These markings serve as cryptic breadcrumbs, hinting at a fascinating story of craftsmanship and design that has been lost to time. Other than the rings being released in New Zealand, possibly via gumball machines, the scarcity of information only adds to the allure of the ring set, making them highly sought after by Phantom collectors.

The Phantom Ring Set are made from lightweight gold colored tin which contain raised reliefs of images from the Phantom storyline. The complete set of 5 rings can be seen below with all except 1 ring containing wording and 2 rings containing colorful enamel. The Phantoms Good and Skull mark are featured, plus profile images of the Phantom, Diana and Devil.

The rear of the Phantom Ring Set all contain the same wording. They feature adjustable ring bands, all stamped with ‘Glenwood Ltd.’, ‘Hong Kong’ and ‘KFS 1979’ on the back. An example of the rear of the rings can be seen below
