Frew Promotional Collateral

Over the years, Frew Publications produced various promotional collateral designed to advertise a particular Phantom comic in Australian news agencies where Phantom comics are sold. The promotional collateral would be on display for several weeks by the newsagent before being thrown out.

Frew Publications was founded in 1948 by Ron Forsyth, Jim Richardson, Jack Eisen & Peter Watson (the Frew name was derived by the last initials of each founder name). Frew Publications boasts the longest running English language Phantom comic book series in the world. Its 1st issue was published on the 9th of September, 1948 and contained the US newspaper reprint, The Slave Traders, by Lee Falk and Ray Moore. Frew Publications of Australia is still alive and well today.

The 1985 promotional poster advertising Phantom comic book number 840A measures 23.5” x 17.5”. This issue includes 3 stories, The Uninvited Visitors, The Terrorists and The Deadliest Animals in the Jungle by Lee Falk and Sy Barry.

Issue #910A Promotional Poster – 1988

The 1988 promotional poster advertising Phantom comic book number 910A contained the famous story The Phantom Goes to War by Lee Falk, Ray Moore, and Wilson McCoy.

Issue #844A Promotional Poster – 1989

The 1989 promotional poster advertising Phantom comic book number 844A measures 17.25” x 12.75”. This issue included 2 stories, Wuluti’s Secret and The Black Fire by Norman Worker and Carlos Cruz.

The image on the poster is found on the cover of comic book number 800 published in 1984, however the text and purpose of the store display poster was to reference comic book number 944A.

Issue #951A Promotional Poster – 1990

The 1990 promotional poster advertising Phantom comic book number 951A measures 18.25” x 15.5”. This issue is the ‘The First Australian CREATED Adventure’ illustrated by Australian Keith Chatto and written by Frew Publication publisher Jim Shepherd. The storyline is not set in Australia, but Bengalla.

The images on the poster are pages found within the comic book on pages 11 and 12.

Issue #1000 Promotional Poster – 1992
