Fantomet Costume Contest

The Fantomet Costume Contest was released by Interpresse in Denmark in 1976. The contest required the reader of Fantomen comic books to create a Phantom costume and post in a picture to the editor dressed up as the Phantom. The winner received a pocket camera.

The Fantomet Costume Contest was launched in Fantomet comic book edition number 58, published in 1976. On the last page of the comic book, page number 50, we see a half page advertisement notifying readers of the upcoming edition plus the Phantom mask notation. The front cover and the mask notation found in Fantomet comic book edition number 58 can be seen below. We read ‘En Rigtig Fantometmaske’, which translates to ‘A Real Phantom Mask’.

The mask is advertised on the front cover of Fantomet edition number 59, with the mask found stapled to the centerfold of the comic book taking up 2 pages. The pages containing the mask are designed to be removed from the comic book, with designated marks printed notifying the reader on where to cut. The front cover and the mask found in Fantomet comic book edition number 59 can be seen below.

Instructions are found on the Phantom mask pages which read when translated to English:

HERE YOU HAVE IT!

This priceless Mardi Gras piece of clothing. This mask has been made especially for FANTOMET’s readers, and has been approved by the BOSS himself. Carefully cut along it solid black line, and glue above, where it is indicated, so that the mask will fit exactly to your skull. You will find tips for the rest of the suit on page 26.

ENJOY!

Winners of the Fantomet Costume Contest are published in Fantomet comic book edition number 63, published in 1976. On the inside and outside of the back cover of the comic book, we see 2 full page photos posted in to the publisher depicting 2 kids dressed as the Phantom, wearing the Phantom mask provided in Fantomen edition number 59. The 2nd place winner is featured on the inside back cover in black and white, whilst the 1st place winner is found on the outside back cover in color.

Text translated to English on the inside back cover reads:

The Mardi Gras competition from No. 59!

Here you see the suit that came in 2nd place in the competition for the best phantom suit.

It has been submitted by Bjørn Guldager, 3923 Narssarssuaq, Greenland. (Report no. 3224).

(No. 1 can be found on the back).

Bjørn writes that he would like to write together with some other club members, and we naturally

hope that many FANTOMITES would like to post a small letter to BJØRN in GREENLAND.

Text translated to English on the outside back cover reads:
