Fantomen Football World Cup Contest

The Fantomen Football World Cup Contest was held by Semic Press in Sweden in 1974. The contest required the reader to create a four line cheering quote to support the Swedish football team competing in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. The front cover of edition number 10 containing the contest can be seen below, with the contest advertised on the front cover.

Found attached to the centerfold of the comic book, we see a fill color foldout page advertisement promoting the contest. The contest was held only in this edition, requiring the reader to create a four line cheering quote, which were then to be sent to the publisher for judging via a provided cutoff coupon. The cheering quotes are required to be posted to the publisher by the 15th of May, with the entrants address details also noted. The first prize presented was a comprehensive trip to Germany to attend the 1974 FIFA World Cup, in which Sweden participated, encompassing two tickets to the Football World Cup.

The consolation prizes offered consists of 100 Fantomen t-shirts and 1000 Fantomen rings.

As you know, Sweden has qualified for a place in the World Cup in Germany this summer through several feat matches, and we all want to help our boys as much as we can.
The competition task is therefore quite simple:
FIND A QUICK, RHYTHMIC, FUN, INSANE – in other words GOOD – CHEERING QUOTES ON TV.
FOUR LINES MAXIMUM and send it to: FANTOMENS TAVLINGSEXPEDITION, 109 48, STOCKHOLM. Don’t forget to send your name and address! POST YOUR CHEERING QUOTES BEFORE MAY 15! And you . . . WRITE THE CHEERING QUOTES ON THE BACK OF THE ENVELOPE AND MARK THE ENVELOPE “FOOTBALL WORLD CUP”!
The entries will be judged by a jury consisting of Rolf Lindberg (responsible publisher). Ulf Granberg. Bo Majgren, Goran Siljerud (Fantomenredaktionen) and its decision cannot be appealed.

The FIFA World Cup held in 1974 ran from the 13th of June thru till the 7th of July and was won by West Germany. They defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the final, which was played in Munich, Germany. This was West Germany’s second World Cup title.
