The ‘Disney Cup’ was produced by King Features Syndicate in USA in 1980. The insulated cup measures 5” x 3” and is made of plastic with a black handle. The black print graphics sit on a sky blue panel which has been inserted into the clear compartment of the cup, wrapping all the way around the cup.
We clearly see licensing Trade Marks for both King Features Syndicate and W.D.P (which is the abbreviation for ‘Walt Disney Productions’), plus the year of the cups production, 1980.
The King Features Syndicate and Walt Disney Productions ‘partnership’ present on this cup is one of only a few known example between these two companies which carry such a mix of comic characters.
The cup’s image consist of the Phantom, Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant, Mandrake, Archie, Popeye, Snuffy Smith, Haggar the Horrible, Blondie and Dagwood, Winnie the Poo, Beetle Bailey, Hi & Lois, Red-Eye, Agatha Crumb and more.
The Phantom’s image found on the cup is assumed to have of been drawn by Don Newton, with the pose of the Phantom commonly found in his comic strips (an example can be seen below). This drawing of the Phantom is believed to be unique to the cup, and not found in any comic strip drawn by Don Newton.
Other collectibles produced by Walt Disney Productions bearing a similar licensing Trade Mark as seen on the cup can be viewed below.
Thank you Christopher Smith for assisting with images and information.
