Defenders Of The Earth Lunch Box & Drink Thermos Set

The Defenders of the Earth Lunch Box and Drink Thermos set was produced by Thermos LLC in USA in 1985. The lunch box and drink thermos set was designed for children to carry their food and drink to school. The set is fully licensed by King Features Syndicate, themed around the Defenders of the Earth cartoon series released in 1986.

Thermos LLC was established by Reinhold Burger, Albert Aschenbrenner and Gustav Robert Paalen in Germany in 1906 under the name of ‘Thermos GmbH’. Reinhold Burger patented a vacuum-insulated flask in Germany in 1903, an item which was used historically to store liquefied gases (invented in 1892 by Scottish born scientist James Dewar). The term ‘Thermos’ was trademarked, also by Reinhold Burger.

In 1912, a production plant was opened in Norwich, Connecticut, USA following a deal made with Thermos GmbH to produce their patented products. As a result, the ‘Norwich’ name is normally seen alongside the Thermos LLC logo on produced products.

In 1955, the company expanded throughout the US and Canada, purchasing other manufactures and diversifying it’s product range to also include jugs, storage containers and outdoor cooking appliances. In 1956, the group of companies were named ‘American Thermos Products Company’ in the US and ‘Canadian Thermos Products Limited’ in Canada.

Thermos LLC is still in operation to this day across various countries, currently owned by Japanese company ‘Nippon Sanso Holdings Corporation’ since purchasing the business in 1989.

The Defenders of the Earth lunch box is made of plastic measuring 7.5” x 8.75” when closed. It was released in both red and blue colors with a white carry handle, opening via a plastic clip at the top, with a full length hinge located at the base. The lid contains a decal with an image of the Defenders of the Earth characters as seen in the cartoon series, plus copyright wording, with the case containing a molded image of the Thermos LLC logo.

The blue version can be seen below.

The red version can be seen below.

The Defenders of the Earth drink thermos is also made of plastic, designed to fit within the lunch box. The main container is red with an image of Flash Gordon and Ming the Merciless as seen in the cartoon series printed on and copyright wording. The container is produced with thick insulated sides to keep liquids hot or cold as required. The twist off lid is white in color, doubling as a drink cup, exposing a white twist off cap containing a straw. All components contain the Thermos LLC logo.
