The Defenders of the Earth Birthday Card series was produced by Gemma Designs Ltd in Andover, Hampshire, UK in 1989. The series contains a total of seven unique Birthday Cards, designed to be given to a child to celebrate their Birthday.
Established in the 1980s by founders Lindesay and Margaret Rudd-Clarke, Gemma International (frequently referred to as Gemma or Gemma Designs) was a prominent, family-run greeting card publisher based in Andover, Hampshire. The business initially sparked to life when the founders, who were independent toy retailers at the time, recognized a significant gap in the market for children’s greeting cards. They realized that the popular, trending characters dominating toy store shelves were noticeably missing from the greeting card aisles, and they set out to bridge that gap.
Over more than three decades in business, Gemma grew into a major player in the UK publishing industry by securing the licensing rights to some of the world’s biggest children’s entertainment brands. They designed, produced, and distributed millions of vibrant birthday cards, gift wraps, and partyware ranges featuring household names like Peppa Pig, Angry Birds, Ben 10, and PJ Masks. Their reach was vast, supplying everyone from large supermarket chains to independent boutiques, and they even operated a unique brokerage model to manage greeting card stock for major toy retailers like The Entertainer.
Despite their long-standing success and the launch of a boutique-focused sibling brand called Studio by Gemma, the company faced severe headwinds in an increasingly competitive retail landscape. In mid-2019, after 34 years of operation, managing director Amanda Parkin announced that despite drastic cost-cutting measures and attempts to find a buyer, the business would officially cease trading and enter voluntary liquidation. Though it is no longer operating, Gemma Designs is remembered warmly within the British stationery industry as a true pioneer of character-licensed children’s greeting cards.
The Defenders of the Earth Birthday Card are printed on heavy-stock paper in full gloss finish color, sequentially themed for ages 4 through 10 and includes a matching collectible badge/pin. Also included in the clear see-through plastic sleeve enclosing the card is a yellow paper envelope. All seven Birthday Cards can be viewed below.
