A Poster History Of The Cliffhanger Serial Poster

A Poster History of the Cliffhanger Serial poster was produced by AC Comics in USA in 1989. The poster depicts 0ver 50 characters found is classic serial movies, radio shows, television series, comic books and other genres with a ‘pulp’ feel.


AC Comics was established by Bill Black in USA in 1969. The comic book publishing company was initially titled ‘Paragon Publications’ up until 1982, before changing to a new name ‘Americomics’. In 1985, the title of the company was shortened to ‘AC Comics’.

AC Comics specializes in reprints of Golden Age comics from companies no longer in operations and whose licensing rights have lapsed into public domain. It also publishes a number of Modern Age adventures starring Golden Age superheroes, most famously Femforce, which features the adventures of an all-female superhero team, one of the first teams of this nature in the comics industry.

AC Comics is still publishing comics to this day, aiming to preserve comic book genres inspired by the series of the past, such as Westerns and jungle adventure.


Cliffhanger Comics was a short series published by AC Comics from 1989 thru till 1990 with 4 editions released containing adventure stories. They presents a tribute to the movie serials from the 1940s and 1950s, containing 40 pages. The edition numbers published on the front covers are 1, 1A, 2 and 2B, with all 4 editions containing unique content, even through we see edition numbers repeat. All 4 of these publications can be seen below.

Cliffhanger Comics number 1A published in 1990 contains an advertisement for ‘A Poster History of the Cliffhanger Serial’ poster. Payment was required to be sent to an address in Florida, USA before AC Comics would mail the buyer the poster in a protective tube.

The poster is printed in full color with a gloss finish measuring 19” x 24”, illustrated by Bill Feret. The comic book characters featured include Superman, Batman, Flash Gordon, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Blackhawk, Nyoka the Jungle Girl, Ming the Merciless, Spy Smasher, Copperhead, Captain Midnight, The Scorpion, Buck Rogers, Commando Cody, Western heroes, Pulp heroes and many more.

The Phantom is also featured on the poster, as seen in the 15 chapter Phantom Serial produced in 1943 by Columbia Pictures, with Tom Tyler playing the part of the Phantom.
