I Grandi Eroi Del Fumetto (which translates to ‘The Great Comic Book Heroes’) was published by Gremese Editore in Rome, Italy in 1990. The softcover book is written by Franco Fossati showcasing a large number of comic book characters, with a brief description of their creators and their place in comic book history.
Gremese Editore was founded by Gianni Gremese in Rome, Italy in 1977. The publishing house initially specialized in publications featuring cinema, theatre, dance, television and other media.
Over time with growing success, Gremese Editore expanded it’s subject offering to also include literature, music, sport, anthologies, essays, illustrated books, manuals, self-help and lifestyle guides.
In 1992, Gremese Editore commenced publishing it’s Italian language catalogue in French text to reach a larger audience outside of Italy. A partnership agreement was established in 2012 with Les Éditions de Grenelle in France. In addition, Gremese Editore also published a number of books in German and English.
Gremese Editore is still publishing books to this day.
I Grandi Eroi Del Fumetto contains a glossy color cover measuring 13cm x 19.5cm. The 255 black and white pages contain a mix of illustrations and Italian text, published under the ‘Compactlibri’ series. A profile image of the Phantom is found on the front cover, alongside a mix of other comic book characters, including The Yellow Kid, Mandrake the Magician and Popeye.

The encyclopedia style book contains from one to four pages devoted to a large variety of comic book character. The Phantom is found under his Italian title of ‘L’Uomo Mascherato’ over four pages, numbers 240 thru to 243. An illustration by Sy Barry is featured, showing the Phantom riding Hero through the jungle with Devil by their side. All four pages can be seen below.
