Çizgiroman Ansiklopedisi

Çizgiroman Ansiklopedisi (which translates to Comic Book Encyclopedia) is a book published by İnkılap Kitabevi in Turkey in 2006. Written by Hakan Alpin, the encyclopedia like book is a comprehensive reference work on comic books containing researchers of comic book history, especially within the Turkish context.

Hakan Alpin, a prominent figure in Turkish comic literature, compiled this encyclopedia based on 14 years of research and writing between 2002 and 2003. The work contains 799 entries, with 261 dedicated to Turkish-origin comics, covering both national and international titles published in Turkey since the 1930s.

Çizgiroman Ansiklopedisi is a hardcover book containing 739 color pages, printed on high-quality first-grade paper, measuring approximately 24cm x 30cm written in Turkish text. The Phantom is seen on the front cover, designed by Kenan Dogan, amongst other comic book characters, seen in his red costume as he’s known in Turkey.

This encyclopedia is considered a seminal resource for Turkish comic book history and culture, often regarded as the most extensive Turkish-language reference in the field. Due to its limited print run and comprehensive content, it has become a sought-after collector’s item.

The back cover, translated from Turkish to English reads:

This book by Alpin, who is the name with the most published articles and reviews on the ninth art in our country, was prepared for publication by the cartoonist himself between 2002-2003 with the accumulation of the last 14 years. The work, which has much more pages and articles than its counterparts in the world, includes exactly 799 article titles (261 of which are from Turkey). The articles in the Comics Encyclopedia, which looks at comics from a Turkish perspective, were selected based on the criteria of recognition in our country. However, some important people and cartoon characters who have left their mark as milestones in world comics art have also been included in the encyclopedia under their own articles. The study, which includes writers/drawers, publications or heroes from a total of 20 countries (USA, Germany, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, France, England, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Poland, Turkey, Yugoslavia), includes 380 people, 117 of whom are Turkish, and 285 publications/heroes, 120 of whom are Turkish. In addition, short comic book histories of countries that have contributed to world comic book culture with their schools are also included in the book under their own articles. The Comic Book Encyclopedia, which is a striking and unique study with the visual coding it uses, is dedicated to all the cartoonists, publishers and, of course, readers who have contributed to Turkish Comic Books.
