Potential spoiler alert ahead; please refrain from reading further if you have not yet read the final edition of the Defenders of the Earth comic book series published by Mad Cave Studios!!!
The fourth and final installment of Mad Cave Studios’ comic book series of Defenders of the Earth was released on the 8th of April 2026, with readers of the series starting to receive their copies in the mail.
For Those Who Came In Late… the Defenders of the Earth are made up of Flash Gordon, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar, who are all licensed by King Features Syndicate. Each character brings a unique set of skills and attributes to the team, allowing them to fight evil forces and protect the world from various threats. Flash Gordon is known for his bravery and quick thinking, while the Phantom embodies a legacy of justice and fearlessness. Meanwhile, Mandrake the Magician harnesses his mystical powers to outsmart adversaries, and Lothar, with his incredible strength, often serves as the muscle of the group. Together, they create a formidable alliance that captivates audiences.
Defenders of the Earth: Dark Destiny, the 2025 follow-up miniseries from Mad Cave Studios, shifts the focus from Earth to the fractured remains of Mongo. Following the death of Ming the Merciless at the hands of his son, Kro-tan, the empire has descended into chaos, and the various factions—including former allies like the Hawk Men and the Lion Men—blame Flash Gordon for the planet’s devastation. The veteran Defenders (Flash Gordon, The Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, and Lothar) find themselves in a precarious political position, eventually facing a death sentence and forced into a “trial by combat” as Flash fights to prove their innocence and reunite the warring tribes of Mongo.
While the elders navigate the political fallout on Mongo, the storyline runs a parallel storyline on Earth featuring the “Second Gen” Defenders. Rick Gordon, Jedda Walker, L.J., K’Shin, and Zuffy embark on a personal quest to find Rick’s missing mother, Dale Arden. Their investigation leads them to a former secret base once held by the son of Ming, where they discover that though Kro-tan may be gone, his legacy of danger remains. This younger team must contend with supernatural threats, including an attack by the Weather Demon, while uncovering a mysterious “bridge between worlds” that connects their mission to the events unfolding on Mongo.
This final edition just released, the fourth part of the comic book series, is an all original series authored by Dan DiDio, illustrated by Alex Sanchez, colored by Juancho Velez and lettering by Carlos M. Mangual. All four editions in the series can be seen below, with edition number one released with three variant covers.

The Defenders of the Earth: Dark Destiny comic book series by Mad Cave Studios will be published in a trade paperback graphic novel. Due for release on the 28th of July 2026, it’ll be published with 104 color pages measuring 10.12cm x 6.61cm, titled ‘Dark Destiny’, collecting the four editions of the series seen above. The cover is illustrated by Marco Santucci, an image seen in the series on the front cover of edition number one, variant cover A.

The concluding panel of the story presented in this fourth edition suggests the possibility that a subsequent series of Defenders of the Earth may be forthcoming by Mad Cave Studios. The final panel, as seen below ends with the words “NEVER THE END!”, is featured below. We see the Defenders of the Earth team accompanied by their children, a perfect way to end the adventure which they were heavily involved with.

It would certainly be exciting to see Mad Cave Studios keep the team-up alive with a follow-up/new comic book series, especially since no other publishers are currently producing original Defenders of the Earth stories.
