The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons by Mad Cave Studios

The U.S. based publishing house Mad Cave Studios will be releasing a new one-shot comic book featuring the Phantom.

Titled ‘The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons‘, this new one-shot comic book has started appearing for preorder online, a new comic book published by Mad Cave Studios. This edition is an innovative standalone new comic book featuring the Phantom against the sea pirate Princess Sin, complementing their established series of ‘The Phantom‘, ‘Defenders of the Earth‘ and other one-shot comic book editions.

For Those Who Came In Late…

Princess Sin remains one of the most compelling and dangerous adversaries in the history of the Phantom comic strip, making her debut in the story ‘Pirates of the Red Dragon: Princess Sin‘, created by Team Fantomen in Sweden in 1979, a story written by Norman Worker and illustrated by Georges Bess. As the ruthless ruler of a group of pirates based on the island of Drakon in South China Sea, she famously commanded the formidable pirates known as The Red Dragon, using it to terrorize the seas and enforce her criminal dominion.

Her character is defined by a striking blend of regal sophistication and cold-blooded tactical brilliance, positioning her as a rare “femme fatale” who could match the Phantom in both intellect and willpower. Whether she is leading a fleet of high-seas marauders or orchestrating complex political power plays, her presence in the series consistently raises the stakes of the Phantom’s mission to eradicate piracy.

Beyond her initial appearances, Princess Sin’s legacy has been expanded through various international publishers and artists, who have often revisited her rivalry with the Nemesis of Evil. This includes Frew Publications in Australia, publishing a trade paperback in 2021 focusing on Princess Sin (seen on the left) titled “The Treasures of Drakon“. Containing a front cover illustrated by Daniel Picciotto and Bryan Valenza with Princess Sin features in the background, this edition published three Phantom adventures created by a variety of writers and artists:

  • Rise of the Red Dragon (Parts 1 & 2) – written by Dale Maccanti and illustrated by Jason Paulos
  • Pirates of the Red Dragon (Parts 1, 2 & 3) – written by Norman Worker and illustrated by Georges Bess
  • The Adventure of the Dragon’s Leg (Parts 1 & 2) – written by Julie Ditrich and illustrated by Wendell Cavalcanti

Her command of The Red Dragon serves as a recurring symbol of her naval might, representing the era of high-stakes maritime adventure that helped define the strip’s Golden Age. Throughout decades of continuity, she uses her resources to challenge the Phantom through psychological warfare and elaborate traps rather than simple physical confrontation. This enduring complexity has made her a favorite amongst Phantom fans, as she represents a sophisticated level of villainy that continues to resonate across different eras of comic book storytelling.

This new all original story and artwork comic book, available for pre-order, will contain approximately 40 full color pages, authored by Ray Fawkes, illustrated by Lynne Yoshii, colored by Juancho Velez and lettering by Taylor Esposito, is due for release on the 17th of June 2026.

The pre-order advertisement describes this edition as:

THE PHANTOM MUST DIE!

But how do you kill a Ghost? The Red Dragons are gonna try—and anyone who gets in the way is just collateral damage! When someone in The Phantom’s familiar cowl starts sinking the Dragons’ pirate operations, Princess Sin goes on the warpath. The South China Sea belongs to the Red Dragons—and they’re not afraid of one man in a mask. Not yet. Another thrilling installment in Ray Fawkes’ action-packed adventure with guest artist Lynne Yoshii!

Two front cover variants of The Phantom vs. The Red Dragons have been released, published by Mad Cave Studios, offer contrasting perspectives on a high-stakes confrontation between the Phantom and his adversaries, The Red Dragons.

  • Cover A (seen below left), illustrated by Alessio Zonno, is a high-octane action sequence rendered in a modern, vibrant art style, with the Phantom leaping forward with a determined expression on his face with his right fist thrust forward, prominently displaying the Good Mark ring whilst a battle takes place in the background, possibly by Red Dragon pirates, on a ship decorated with dragon motifs and East Asian calligraphy. The composition uses a low-angle perspective and a shallow depth of field to emphasize the Phantoms speed and the lethal stakes of the confrontation.
  • Cover B (seen below right), illustrated by Freddie Williams II and Andrew Dalhouse, presents a more cinematic and symbolic cover art, showing a massive close-up portrait of the Phantom in the background, his expression grim and his hand raised displaying the Skull Ring. Tangled around him is a jagged, red-scaled dragon body that links the Phantom to the woman on the left, the leader of the Red Dragons Princess Sin, who stands confidently in a black dress adorned with a matching dragon motif. The bottom of the frame features a naval setting with a large destroyer and a smaller patrol boat near a tropical coastline, all rendered with a textured, gritty finish and a warm, sun-drenched palette that suggests a high-stakes confrontation in the South China sea.

Although the front cover indicates that this is edition number one, the comic book is being advertised as a one-shot publication, with no further editions in this series anticipated after this release.
