John Capodice, who appeared in the Phantom movie released in 1996 as the lovable New York taxi driver passed away on the 30th of December 2024 at the age of 83.

John Capodice, born on December 25, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, was an accomplished American actor known for his versatility and knack for bringing authentic character portrayals to both stage and screen. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Capodice initially pursued his passion for acting through theater, making notable appearances in Off-Broadway and Broadway productions.

In the late 1970s, Capodice appeared in Getting Out, a critically acclaimed play staged at the Marymount Manhattan Theatre and later at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. His Broadway debut came in Requiem For a Heavyweight, where he performed alongside a stellar cast that included John Lithgow and George Segal.

Transitioning to film and television, Capodice became a familiar face to audiences through his diverse roles. He made guest appearances on numerous television series, including Ryan’s Hope, Spenser: For Hire, Kate & Allie, Seinfeld, Murder She Wrote, Murphy Brown, Knots Landing, Hunter, and Law & Order.

His film credits feature performances in Q (1982) as Doyle, Family Business (1989) as Tommy, The Doors (1991), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989) as a police detective, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994), Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994), Speed (1994), Independence Day (1996), and Enemy of the State (1998). Additionally, he lent his voice to the character Sidney Pen in the 2010 video game Mafia II.

Capodice’s versatility and distinctive presence allowed him to portray a wide range of characters, from law enforcement officers to everyday individuals, contributing significantly to both stage and screen. His dedication to his craft earned him recognition and respect within the entertainment industry.

The Phantom Movie

In 1996, John Capodice appeared in the Phantom movie, starring Billy Zane as the Phantom and Kristy Swanson as Diana Palmer. The film follows Kit Walker as he battles the Singh Brotherhood as they look at brining the Skulls of Touganda together.

Capodice played the role of the lovable taxi driver in the film under the name of Al, providing a touch of humor and relatability in the midst of the high-stakes action. Though his screen time was brief, his performance added a sense of grounded realism to the larger-than-life story.

Al interacts with the Phantom in New York, becoming his trusty taxi driver after the Phantom under the guise of Kit Walker, makes payment for his taxi fare with a handful of precious stones when driven to the New York Tribune.

Capodice’s contribution, though small in the Phantom movie, showcased his talent for bringing everyday characters to life in memorable ways, instantly warming to the character.
