Early Brazilian Phantom Comic Book At Auction

An upcoming auction listing has been posted on the US based Heritage Auctions website featuring an early Phantom comic book published in Brazil.

O Fantasma Em Justiça Do Deserto, which translates to ‘The Phantom in Justice of the Desert‘ was published by EBAL (Editora Brasil – América Limitada) in Brazil in 1948. The comic book is part of a series of 5 comic books featuring a different character per edition, the Phantom, Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, Radio Patrol in Action and Secrete Agent X-9.

O Fantasma Em Justiça Do Deserto is published in landscape format with a color cover containing 69 black and white pages. The Phantom comic strip story published is ‘The Slave Traders‘, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by Ray Moore, however EBAL renamed the story to ‘Desert Justice‘.

The comic book listed by Heritage Auctions has been slabbed and graded at 3.5, with the condition noted as ‘Cream to Off-White Pages‘. Heritage Auctions describe the comic book as:

Published as O Fantasma Em Jusica de Deserto. Brazilian publication containing Phantom daily comic strips printed between 1/30/39 and 5/6/39. Ray Moore art. Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 10/24: 1 in 3.5, none higher.

The other editions found in the series can be seen below. Mandrake the Magician in edition number 2, Secrete Agent X-9 in edition number 3 and Radio Patrol in Action in edition number 4, all published in 1948. Flash Gordon is found in the final edition, number 5 which was published in 1950.
