Appearing on the CBR website, written by Ashley Land, is an interesting post titled ‘10 Best Movies Based on Comic Strips, Ranked‘.
Ashley provides a list of characters whose origins stem from comic strips, used as the inspiration for movies. Some were an instant success, whilst others have either grown in popularity over time or still remain average in the eyes of their respective fan base.
Amongst the comic strip characters ranked in the post include Charlie Brown from Peanuts, Dennis the Menace, Tintin, Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Garfield and Flash Gordon.
The Phantom movie released in 1996 staring Billy Zane as the Phantom is also noted, ranked number 4 in a list of 10 movies. Ashley writes about the Phantom movie in his post:
Created by Lee Falk, the Phantom was one of the key precursors to the age of the superhero. Passed down between fathers and sons, the hero is the protector of the fictional African nation of Bengalla, which he shields from piracy, looters, predatory corporations and more. In 1996, the character was adapted to the big screen with Billy Zane in the leading role.
1996’s Phantom follows the 21st Phantom, Kit Walker, as he ventures outside Bengalla to the United States, where he learns of the resurgent Singh Brotherhood, his old enemy. The film combines swashbuckling fun, Indiana Jones-style adventure and pulpy action.
The Phantom movie received mixed reviews by both Phantom fans and the general public when it was initially released in our cinemas in 1996. Opinions on the movie continues to divide fans to this day, with some enjoying it, whilst others criticizing some of the creative liberties taken by the producers (such as the costume design and supernatural themes).
