Appearing on a variety of websites in Sweden, we see a new Phantom comic book by Story House Egmont available for pre-order.
Titled ‘Fantomen – Älskade Pirat‘, which translates to ‘Phantom – Beloved Pirate‘, is a hardcover comic book with a dust jacket which will contain approximately 430 color pages in Swedish text. The comic book is limited to 1000 copies.
Fantomen – Älskade Pirat will contain comic strip stories centered around Kate Sommerset, a character first introduced to readers in Sweden in 2003, in Fantomen edition number 8. The story published in this edition is titled ‘The Pirate Queen‘, written by David Bishop and illustrated by César Spadari.
The background story of Kate Sommerset is that she was born in England in 1848. On a voyage with her family to relocate from England to Bengali in 1856, the ship she was travelling on was attacked by Singh Pirate off the coast of Bengali, resulting in the death of her father. She and a golden crucifix her father (Vicar Reginald Sommerset) was carrying at the time were taken, the Phantom arriving on the scene too late, pledging to her family that he would rescue her.
After spending 4 years on a pirate ship, the Phantom eventually saves Kate, but not before she stabs the pirate captain in the back. Kate is reunited with her surviving family in Bengali.
Kate is sent by her mother back to England to study, however Kate has other plans, disguising herself as a male sailor and joining a pirate ship crew aboard the ‘Crimson Corsair‘. She eventually crosses paths with her fathers killer, who she kills following an extensive sword fight. The Phantom makes an appearance following the sword fight, tending to Kate’s wounds.
Following the death of the ‘Crimson Corsair‘ captain, Kate is appointed the captain of the pirate ship, given the name ‘The Pirate Queen‘, becoming a notorious and wanted pirate!!!
Kate Sommerset has appeared in a number of Phantom adventures following her introduction in 2003, a popular character due to her unique relationship with the Phantom, written into at least 11 Phantom stories.
Fantomen – Älskade Pirat will see a number of Phantom stories to feature Kate Sommerset collected into the one publication. Online advertisements for the book describe it as:
When Kate Sommerset is kidnapped by the pirates who murdered her father, her world is turned upside down. She becomes the queen of the pirates, and thus the Phantom’s sworn enemy, something that turns their budding romance into a deadly game.
