Original Wilson McCoy Phantom Comic Strip Art At Auction

An upcoming auction listing has been posted on the US based Heritage Auctions website featuring original comic strip art by Wilson McCoy.

The Sunday comic strip on offer was originally printed in newspapers on the 26th of March 1961. The art featured in the comic strip is by Wilson McCoy, the second artist to illustrate Phantom Sunday newspaper comic strips, following on from Ray Moore in the late 1940s.

The comic strip art is from the classic story titled ‘The Goggle-Eye Pirates‘, written by Lee Falk and illustrated by Wilson McCoy, published every Sunday in newspapers from the 30th of October 1960 thru till the 26th of March 1961. The panels contain the conclusion to the story, with the Phantom seen saving the day by stopping the Goggle-Eye Pirates from stealing from the S.S.Mallar.

The original artwork offered is made up of 9 comic strip panels plus the title panel in black and white, with Heritage Auctions notifying us of the size, measuring 25.75″ x 5.5″. The image as posted by Heritage Auctions can be seen below.

The comic strip as it appears in print can be seen below.

The description seen on the auction listing reads:

Wilson McCoy was in the zenith of his narrative artistry during his last living year (he passed away in July of 1961). This great Sunday featuring a victorious Phantom is rendered in ink over graphite on three sections of Bristol board, each with an approximate image area of 25.75″ x 5.5″. The four panels of the third section are affixed on another board. Adhesive residue staining. Light toning and handling wear. In Very Good condition.

The comic strip looks like it’s in fantastic condition, considering its been 63 years since it was illustrated, which looks like it’s been well cared for with very little damage or signs of wear present.

The auction listing goes live on the 19th of February 2024.
