Found on the Screen Rant website, we read an entertaining post titled ‘10 Best 1990s Comic Book Movies Ranked‘, written by Brad Curran.

The post lists comic book themed movies which appeared on our big screens in the 1990s, predating the style and effect filled movies we watch in our cinemas in this day and age. These movies didn’t have the luxury of large budgets or the advancement in technology seen in movie making today.

As a result, these movies released in the 1990s contain a unique sense of ‘charm’, especially when focusing on aspects such as story telling, costume design, locations/staging and stunt creativity.

Brad rightly mentions that these comic book themed movies didn’t achieve huge success both financially or popularity at the time, however, as time has passed, their nostalgic appeal has grown

The variety of comic book character movies listed in the post include, Batman, Dick Tracey, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Rocketeer, Blade and more.

The Phantom movie released in 1996 with Billy Zane staring as the Phantom also features in Brads post. Brad writes about the Phantom movie:

Another ’90s superhero bomb that has stood the test of time, The Phantom adapts Lee Falk’s ’30s comic book strip with Billy Zane portraying Kit Walker, the latest man to assume the mantle of The Ghost Who Walks and finding himself in a race to stop Xander Drax (Treat Williams) from seizing the Skulls of Touganda. The Phantom captures the feel of pulpy adventure well, and with his ever-sardonic screen presence, Zane brings plenty of quippy fun to his portrayal of Kit. The Phantom might not have spawned the superhero adventure franchise Paramount Pictures was hoping for, but it’s still a treasure hunt well worth embarking upon.

Although the Phantom movie wasn’t a big hit in cinemas when it was released back in 1996, it certainly remains a well loved movie, and a very much entertaining one for both fans and casual watchers of comic book themed movies.
